Debra Montgomery, Partner
Debra Montgomery is a partner practicing in the areas of intellectual property, marketing and licensing. She completed her law degree at The University of Western Ontario in 1990 and was called to the Ontario Bar in 1992. Debra received her Masters of Laws in Intellectual Property Law in 2000. She has been a Registered Canadian Trade-mark Agent since 1995.
Debra is a former instructor in the Civil Litigation section of the Bar Admission Course. She has spoken at conferences on a number of topics, and has been a panel moderator. She has frequently been a judge for international student moot competitions and has been actively involved in a number of boards and committees. She currently sits as a board member for a private Toronto sport and social club.
Debra's legal experience includes positions at Toronto IP boutiques and she was in-house counsel for several years in the financial and entertainment industries. Her wide range of commercial and IP experience allows her to provide timely, cost-effective services in the following specialty areas:
Intellectual Property
Debra advises clients on trade-mark, copyright and licensing matters, as well as trade-mark oppositions and prosecutions. Debra has also been involved with naming and branding of products, from naming strategies and concepts to availability and registration. Debra also has extensive experience drafting and negotiating agreements to protect, license and market intellectual property, business methods and technology.
Marketing
Debra provides services to a number of Canadian and international marketing and advertising companies and advises on compliance with Canadian legislation including privacy and Do Not Call legislation. She regularly negotiates agreements for the marketing of products and services and provides advice to clients in respect of contests, promotions, advertising copy and content.
