Kathleen Simmons, Lawyer
Kathleen Simmons practices in the areas of copyright, broadcasting and communications law. Kathleen received her LL.B. from the University of Ottawa, Faculty of Law in 2007, where she specialized in technology law and copyright. Following her call to the Ontario Bar in 2008 Kathleen was employed as Legal Counsel at the Canadian Association of Broadcasters, where she had also completed her articles. She joined Hayes eLaw in June 2010.
Kathleen is a copyright specialist, having concentrated both the majority of her studies in law school and the majority of her practice in this area to date. She has extensive knowledge and experience in the collective administration of copyright and the certification of copyright tariffs, having been intimately involved in all aspects of the largest tariff proceeding before the Copyright Board of Canada to date, the 2008 commercial radio tariff proceeding. Kathleen is also experienced in research, strategic planning and lobbying on a variety of other copyright issues, including neighbouring rights, digital rights management, and user rights, and has experience in dealing with regulatory issues before the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC).
Kathleen has written and published the Podcasting Legal Guide for Canada, and been a contributing editor for In the Public Interest: The Future of Canadian Copyright Law and several editions of the University of Ottawa Law and Technology Journal.
Prior to attending law school, Kathleen received a B.A. Hons. in Communications from the University of Ottawa and worked as a Communications Advisor in the federal government.
Kathleen is currently a member of the Canadian Bar Association, the Ontario Bar Association, the Government Relations Institute of Canada and Canadian Women in Communications.
